STLE offers opportunities to get involved in serving our technical community through participation with our local sections, committees, and other activities. Please note you must be a current STLE member to serve on any STLE committee.

STLE Development Committee

Time Commitment: Few hours - 1 year, varies based on volunteer activity. Requirements: Current STLE Member

Description: The Development Committee provides strategic direction/guidance for STLE's NextGen Fund, which directly supports various programs and initiatives that help students and early career professionals in advancing their technical knowledge, research, and career opportunities. These initiatives include STLE Early Career Awards, Student and Early Career Research Posters, Local Section Support, Tribology STEM Camp, Presidential Awards Program and Student Travel Grants for Conference Attendance. The committee's responsibilities include identifying, nurturing, soliciting, and managing current and potential donors. They also collaborate with staff and STLE's Board of Directors on other fundraising strategies to support the NextGen Fund. 

Editorial & Publications Committee

Time Commitment: Few hours - 1 year, varies based on volunteer activity. Committee members serve a three-year term with the option to serve two terms. Requirements: Current STLE Member

Description: The function of the STLE Editorial & Publications Committee is to provide strategic direction/guidance and to implement policies and procedures to ensure that the content, format and frequency of STLE's major technical publications and other print & digital products provide alignment with the society's mission and the needs of its members.

Meetings will be held at the discretion of the committee chair, but the committee and subcommittees meet at least four times a year.

STLE Education Committee 

Time Commitment: Few hours - 1 year, varies based on volunteer activity. Requirements: Current STLE Member

Description: The Education Committee is responsible for maintaining and expanding STLE's educational content, including annual meeting education courses, webinars, Industry Insights discussion series, short courses, and the STLE Virtual Symposium. This role involves assisting with subject matters, networking with industry professionals, collaborating with other volunteers, recruiting new volunteers, and fulfilling other duties as assigned.

Metalworking Fluids (MWFs) Education Committee

Time Commitment: Few hours - 1 year, varies based on volunteer activity. Requirements: Current STLE Member

Description: The Metalworking Fluids (MWFs) Education Committee is responsible for maintaining and expanding STLE's MWF educational content, including annual meeting education courses, webinars, Industry Insights discussion series, short courses, and STLE's Metalworking Fluid Management Program. This role involves assisting with subject matters, networking with industry professionals, collaborating with other volunteers, recruiting new volunteers, and fulfilling other duties as assigned.

Applicants should have at least 10 years of industry experience and a 4-year technical degree in science or engineering. Those interested in pursuing an STLE CMFS certification are preferred candidates for this committee

Oil Monitoring Analyst (OMA) Education Committee

Time Commitment: Virtual committee meetings are held once a month for an hour. Additional outside work may be required at times in preparation. Requirements: Current STLE Member

Description: The Oil Monitoring Analyst (OMA) Education Committee is responsible for maintaining the OMA certification exam and advancing STLE by introducing cutting-edge topics in oil monitoring. This role involves assisting with subject matters, networking with industry professionals, collaborating with other volunteers, recruiting new volunteers, and fulfilling other duties as assigned. Those with the STLE OMA certification designation are preferred candidates for this committee.

STLE E-Mobility Conference Planning Committee

Time Commitment: Virtual committee meetings are held every two to three weeks for an hour. Requirements: Current STLE Member

Description: The STLE E-Mobility Conference Planning Committee is responsible for designing the technical program for the STLE Tribology & Lubrication for E-Mobility Conference, which aims to connect industry professionals with leading experts and companies in the e-mobility field. As a committee member, you'll collaborate with industry and STLE representatives to determine the event's timeline venue, subject matter, strategic approach and overall direction. Additionally, the committee reviews the abstracts submitted for talks, makes decisions on acceptance, and presides over various sessions during the conference.

Member Ambassadors

Time Commitment: One year (ongoing join date) Requirements: Current STLE Member

Description: Ambassadors meet remotely once a month and spend a few minutes to an hour each month welcoming new members by email and phone and may also help staff the Annual Meeting STLE Membership booth and attend the new member welcome reception. 

Webinar Presenter – STLE Education

Time Commitment: Short-Term (Few hours) (For members or non-members)

Description: STLE Education is looking for individuals (members or non-members) who would be interested in presenting a self-created, one-hour technical subject-based Webinar. STLE welcomes any topic submissions or suggestions for webinars, however, subject areas that are most in demand by STLE are these topics:

  • Electric Motor Lubrication
  • Pneumatics
  • Natural Gas Engines
  • Fuels and their Impact on Lubrication

Industry Insights Presenter – STLE Education

Time Commitment: Short-Term (few hours) (For members or non-members)

Description: The Industry Insights virtual discussion series comes out each month exclusively to STLE members only. Presenters are asked to bring a relevant and emerging topic in the field of tribology and lubrication to present. Each presentation should talk about the relevancy of the issue, how it applies to the field, experiences with it, and where others might see this in their own jobs. Each presenter should put together a 30- to 40-minute presentation and take questions from participants for the last part of the discussion.   

STLE Perfecting Motion® Podcast – STLE Education

Time Commitment: Short-Term (few hours) (For members or non-members)

Description: The STLE podcast series focuses on emerging trends in the industry, STLE member benefits, and events. Individuals interested in recording a 20- to 40-minute episode must have at least one other person to host the episode to facilitate a conversation (more than one is also fine). Presenters will meet with STLE’s director of professional development beforehand to outline topics, questions, formatting, and final edits of the podcast prior to recording via Zoom. Presenters will have the opportunity to have edits made prior to it being published on all major streaming podcast platforms.   

STLE Local Sections

Time Commitment: Few hours – 1 year, varies based on volunteer activity. Requirements: Current STLE Member

Description: STLE Local Sections provide quality programming on a variety of industry-related topics. Get involved with your local section by volunteering to speak at one of the technical meetings, sponsoring educational meetings, or participating in networking and social events.
